El drama de "Papá Goriot" se desarrolla en París durante el siglo XIX . Las particularidades de esta historia se hallan al pie de Montmartre y las alturas de Montrouge, en una pensión pobre y deteriorada conocida como la Casa Vauquer, situada en la parte baja de la calle Nueve-Sainte-Genevieve, entre el barrio Latino y el de Saint Marceau. En dicho lugar se percibe un aire sombrío, la tierra es seca, los arroyos no tienen agua, está rodeado de casas tétricas, las murallas huelen a cárcel y hasta el hombre más despreocupado se entristece allí por su apariencia.
